Description
The green grape variety Johanniter is a PIWI ( Pilzwiderstandsfähige ) variety, which means it has been developed for its fungal resistance. This means it does not require spraying in the same way as traditional grape varieties.
The bud burst time is medium and the frost resistance is very good. The leaf wall grows upright with few side shoots and tendrils, which makes it easy to work with. The ripening time and harvest for the grapes is relatively early and with the thick grape skin the incidence of rot is low.
Harvesting
The harvest is relatively high and consistent. The bunches are compact, which poses some risk of Botrytis.
Cultivation site
This grape variety requires planting in a well-planned location with good conditions.
The wines
Fresh, lively wines with clear fruitiness where green apple, gooseberry and citrus fruit stand out. A pleasant acidity is present in wines made from Johanniter but is normally lower than many other green PIWI grape varieties grown in the Nordic region.
Resistance
Powdery mildew: medium
Leaf mold: high
Botrytis: medium
